sewn: traces
traces 2011-15
Back sides of sewn photographs from my life: archival photo, stain, thread. Traces examines what is left behind in the process of creating imagery. In this series, the backs of photographs are the primary works. The photographic “memory” on the front inevitably leaves traces behind. I sew on the front side of the image to re-experience and simplify the memory. I re-experience my photograph, it’s memory, it’s meaning as I draw with thread. The pieces are soaked and dyed to congeal the thread, paper, imagery into one. Ultimately, the photograph is gone, the drawn memory is all that remains.
